String Ensemble

Welcome to the Beverly High School String Ensemble. Our 2015-2016 ensemble included 26 violinists, violists, cellists and bassists. They earned a silver medal and an excellent rating on our 2016 trip to Nashville. Our director, Stephen Smith, has led the group for the last two years. For most of his career he was music director of the Waring School where he conducted the school orchestra and was chairman of the music department.

We perform all styles of music from the Baroque masters, Vivaldi and Bach, classical greats like Mozart and romantic composers including Tchaikovsky and Puccini. We perform jazz and modern repertoire as well.

Several of our cellists and bassists started playing their instruments last spring! They have done wonderfully this year, especially on our Nashville trip!

We work hard but we make sure to enjoy ourselves. Motivated beginners are very welcome to our group. Mr. Smith offers lessons on all string instruments after school. If anyone is interested in joining our group, most likely we will have an instrument to loan you!
